Fireflies
I was listening to music, as I almost always do, when "Fireflies" by Owl City started playing. Despite being among my list of favorite songs, and the song that I listened to constantly when I was a 2nd year college student, I sat listening and the philosophical side of me decided to come out and play. The instrumentals of the song make me smile. There's just something happy about them! Don't judge me, I bet you smiled too listening to the music! :) The first, and probably the most obvious, mental image that comes to my mind is of ten million fireflies flying overhead as I stand in the middle of a field at midnight. It has to be dark out. Stars and fireflies are beautiful! Now, where I grew up, I didn't have fireflies. I only got to see them when I visited my grandparents in Virginia. So I may be a bit jealous of those of you who have them in your backyard. But back to the song before I go down memory lane. After imagining the fireflies above, "I'd like to make myself believe, That planet Earth turns slowly." Just make to moment last for as long as it possibly could. I'm a stickler for beauty. peace and quiet, and anything that makes me smile. While the meaning of the song may be about growing up yet retaining a piece of your childhood, I see it as holding onto ones dreams despite the passage of time. Probably the same thing, right? It may be hard to say goodbye to ten million fireflies but keeping a piece of your inner child keeps you remembering who you were, who you wanted to be, and how you turned into who you are. Your inner child is as important to yourself as the blood that flows through your veins. Maybe not in the literal life blood, but as a metaphorical sense of self driving you to be the best you can be. How can you become someone you respect and love if you don't understand where you came from? To everyone with an inner child reaching out into their everyday lives, cheers! Let those past fireflies push you further to becoming a better you!
