Dethroned - Ch 5, Choke Collar

Choke Collar

Michael
Well that wasn’t too hard. Cross Communications' security sucks. If they couldn’t stop me from making it to Mr. Hayes office, then this place would become a feeding ground if others knew. Staring at the large dark wooden double doors in front of me, I wondered if I should turn back. Nathan and I were not friends; maybe we could be considered acquaintances. However, I’ve been bored. Lily provided something for me to do, even if it was for him. The Hunters at the front door, well, the receptionist was nice, the security stayed in their little booth, no one came after me. I smiled at the cute girl behind the desk and asked where the elevators were. She pointed me in the right direction which just so happened to have me walk past the security booth. Well, they had some security at least. When I stepped into the elevator, I turned to see one of them watching me. Maybe not my smartest move, but I felt like taunting them. I grinned at the poor soul as my eyes flashed red before the door closed. His look of horror was priceless. Nothing interesting happened on the long ride up, but the Hunters should’ve been scrambling; yet, when the doors opened, no fight. I was even beginning to get a little twitchy; I wanted a fight, to shed some blood. Another receptionist welcomed me. She was older than the one downstairs and she looked up at me with a practiced smile. All she wanted me to do was sign-in to the office. Once I had done that, she told me that Mr. Hayes was expecting me. That was what caught my ears, even though I signed under a false name. He was expecting me? Guess my little game down by the entrance had raised some attention. They were good at covering it up too. I reached for the door handle and swung the door wide open to see the blonde man sitting in his comfortable looking leather chair at the rather large oak desk and three others in the room; two by the desk and the other by the door. Instantly, I felt their strength; Hunters. They were smarter than they looked here; giving a deo a false sense of security before bringing them down. Nice little all too familiar trick. I was hesitant to close the door completely but the Hunter closest to me made his move first reaching for the handle. Letting the handle go, I took a few steps closer to the desk, noting his golden nameplate on his desk. Samuel Lee Hayes. “So, you must be Sammy?” The blonde man frowned. Yep, that was definitely him. His hair and eyes are the same as Lily’s but he had a rougher edge to him unlike his sweet little girl.
“I am Samuel Hayes.” Emphasis on Samuel. He doesn’t like being called Sammy; this was going to be fun.
I grinned. “Perfect!” Clapping my hands together, I took another step closer causing the Hunter on his right to stand taller. “You’re just the one I need to talk to.” Glancing at the Hunter, I flashed my fangs as I spoke. “I’m sure you already know what I am?”
Hayes nodded. “And I’m sure you know what we are?”
Walking closer to him, the Hunter on his right moved to stand between Hayes and me. Seeing as I was still a good fifteen feet from the edge of the desk, this Hunter was seemingly a little too eager. Keeping my eyes on this one, I spoke to Hayes. “I’ve come with a request.” He raised an eyebrow. “Release a certain deo that you have collared, Nathan Saber.”
The laugh that came out of him was filled with humor and a venom spiked hatred. He believed I was just some insane deo. Which, I will admit, I am acting mad. Walking into a Hunter stronghold isn’t the smartest thing to do after all. “Let me get this straight, you, a deo, want me, a Hunter, to uncollar a deo that I have captured?” He laughed again. “I cannot believe what I’m hearing. A deo trying to save one of its own kind! When did you decide not to be so greedy?”
Good point. Deo are greedy creatures. We want what we want and we don’t care what happens to others in our way. We especially don’t care much about protecting our own kind, well, most of our kind anyway. Sure, some of us live in groups, but those are few and far between now. Family and mates are also another exception to that rule. Grinning wide, I answered him honestly. “To tell you the truth, I don’t care about him. I’m still as greedy as ever and I’m only here at the request of someone else.”
“Someone else?” Hayes stood while staring me down. “Does this someone else have feelings for my deo?” He was referring to Lily. I shrugged, best not to give away what I know. Hearing his chuckle, I couldn’t help but glare him down. “What she has offered you is irrelevant. My pet is not going free at your, or anyone else’s request. He belongs to me and is serving his purpose.”

Sighing, I was both relieved this was going to be a fight and annoyed that I had to deal with him. My turn to chuckle. “So be it.” Flexing my claws, I jumped forward. The two Hunters by him both pulled out their handguns and began firing at me. The sting in my left shoulder brought forward a buried self, a wrathful, prideful self. Feeling an old life stirring, I let my viciousness rise.

Lily was staring at a text on her cell phone when Nathan shadowstepped us to his kitchen. She didn’t look up, only read the message. “‘Hurry over! We need you, now!’ Michael is raising hell. They want us to defend my father.” Who is her father? Looking up at Nathan, her eyes had the beginnings of tears. What did she know? “Nathan… He’s going to summon you.”
“Random text means defend your father?” I asked.
“I know. He has me on edge already.” Nathan leaned against the counter as he crossed his arms.
“Summon?” I was confused and being ignored.
Nathan looked at me sullenly. “Ijs… There are things about this world that changes people.” He looked down. “One is a deo being collared by a Hunter.” His face looked pained. “A collared dog must obey his master. No matter the order.”
I frowned. Nathan is collared? Wait… That couldn’t be true. He was too strong! Shaking my head, I may have looked like a child. “No! You are not collared! You can’t be!” Closing my eyes tight, I realized how close to tears I was. Damn me and these stupid humanlike emotions. “You’re too strong. No Hunter should be able to collar you.”
His hand was on my shoulder the next moment. His emotionless expression somehow only confirmed that he wasn’t lying. “Being filled with self-pride then having it ripped away by a stupid mistake changes a deo.” Nathan closed his eyes but his expression changed toward anger. “And since then, I’ve wanted nothing more than to let him see my wrath.”
Lily looked away. “He cannot say who his master is, but I can.” She looked at me with a set anger and determination. “His master is my father, Samuel Hayes.”
“Then why would he want to summon Nathan?”
“Because he is also the head of Cross Communications, a Hunter corporation.”
That explains enough. She is a Hunter, her father is a Master Hunter who controls a deo which just so happens to be my brother. My anger began to boil toward Lily then. “Then why are you even here? It’s because of you he’s like this!”
“No. It’s not.” I looked at my brother. “It was my mistake that got me collared. I was careless, easy prey for them, and I fell into their trap. Then I met her father, later, I met her.” He glanced at Lily then stared at the ceiling. “She’s trying to help me.”
Lily nodded slowly. “My father won’t listen to me when it comes to Nathan. So instead, I asked for Michael’s help to confront him.”
Nathan looked away frowning. “You shouldn’t have done that. Sending him into that kind of situation could—” He paused, staring into nothing. Nathan’s eyes widened and a bright blue ring appeared around his sapphire irises. A moment later, he shadowstepped without a word.
Lily rested her head on her arms on the table. “This isn’t going to be good.”
